A man has been arrested on charges of slandering Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, from the Bianibazar area of Sylhet.
The arrestee was identified as Sheikh Helal Ahmed Badsha alias Khaled Ahmed Badsha, 51, from Khashirband village of Bianibazar upazila.
He was arrested by Bianibazar police on Tuesday, for slandering Bangabandhu and the prime minister in a video.
The video went viral on various social media and messaging platforms such as Imo and WhatsApp. In the video, Badsha used abusive language against the prime minister and Bangabandhu. He also made provocative statements against the Awami League and police.
Police arrested him after the incident became known in his locality. Badsha was produced before the court on Wednesday afternoon, said Shahjalal Munshi, officer in-charge (OC) of Bianibazar police station.
After primary interrogation, Badsha confessed that he had recorded the video in 2015, when he was staying in Brazil, and later spread it through social media platforms.
A case under the ICT Act has been lodged against Badsha with Bianibazar police station, the OC said.
