Road accidents kill 17 across the country

Road accidents across the country have killed 17 people on Saturday.

In Narsingdi, six people, mostly women and children, were killed in a road crash on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway and nine others were injured in the incident near the Kharakmara area, Narsingdi Additional Superintendent of Police Shafiur Rahman confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune.

The deceased are Nurunnahar, 65, her daughters Hasina Akter, 32 and Marzia Akter, 17, their neighbours Zannati, 14, Bayed, 10, and the leguna driver Masum, 21. 

According to local police and fire service officials, a party of 70-80 people, hailing from the Ramnagar area of the Raipura upazila, rented five legunas (a type of human hawler) on Friday to visit the Dream Holiday Park in Narsingdi. 

In Chapainawabganj, two motorcycle passengers died on the Sonamasjid Chapainawabganj highway, after losing control due to hard braking.

Shibganj police station SI Jewel have identified the deceased as Mukul Reza, 36, and Bahadur, 37.

In Comilla, two died and 20 others were injured, after a passenger bus lost control and fell on the roadside along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.

SI Abdul Hossain of Miabazar police outpost has identified the deceased as Shapan Kumar Sutradhar of Faridpur and Asad Mallik of Pabna.

In Jhenaidah, a man died after being run over by a microbus on the Hat Gopalpur College road.

Fire service Sub-Station Abdur Rouf confirmed the news of the accident and identified the deceased as Shahin Hossain, 46.

In Natore, two people died and one injured after a bus collided head-on with a truck at the Boraigram Lalpur upazila border area.

Bonpara highway police SI Noni Gopal said: “The deceased were the truck driver and his helper, but their names could not be identified.”

In Tangail, two motorcycle passengers have died in Madhupur upazila having lost control of the bike.

The deceased were identified as Arif Hossain, 15, and Shajib, 14, by the Madhupur police station OC Shafikul Islam.

In Jessore, two women died in two separate accidents and a man injured in the Hashimpur and Rajarhat area of the city.

The deceased were identified as Rokeya Begum, 50 and Beauty Begum, 40. Jessore Kotwali police station OC Shamim Ahmed confirmed the deaths.
