A suspected drug trader has been killed in an alleged gunfight with members of Detective Branch (DB) of police in Mymensingh sadar upazila.
The deceased Bacchu alias Bhebel Bacchu was accused in 15 drug-related cases, said Ashiqur Rahman, officer-in-charge of district DB police.
A DB team conducted a drive in Shambuganj area around 2:45am on Tuesday after being informed that a gang of drug traders had gathered in the area for sharing drug money, Ashiqur said.
Sensing police presence, the drug traders hurled brick chips at them and later opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to fire back, triggering the gunfight.
The gunfight left Bacchu injured.
He was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Police recovered 200 yaba tablets and four bullet shells from the spot, the OC said.
Two policemen were also injured in the gunfight, the OC added.
Around 150 people have been killed in 'gunfights' with law enforcers in countrywide anti-narcotic drives since mid-May.
