The Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) have vowed to take stern action to curb rising incidents of juvenile delinquency in the port city of Chittagong.
While talking to the Dhaka Tribune on Thursday, CMP Additional Commissioner (Crime & Operation) Amena Begum said that they had already increased patrols where teenagers frequently gather on the streets.
“We have set up check-posts at different parts of the city in order to frisk suspicious individuals in the evening. Anybody found to be carrying sharp weapons during the search will be arrested. We are also seizing unregistered motorcycles, and arresting motorcyclists unable to produce valid documents,” she added.
“We will not allow teenagers to go outside after 10pm in the city. We will detain anyone found outside at night who lacks a specific purpose for being out, and will call their parents down to the police station. The detained will be handed over to their parents after giving an undertaking. And ones found to have committed crimes will be arrested,” added the additional commissioner.
“We are also asking the teens not to wander around in the evening. For instance, a boy or a girl, aged 15 is not supposed to hang out on the streets in the evening. Recently some teenagers have been found to mug people posing as adolescents hanging out on the streets,” she continued.
CMP Detective Branch on Wednesday arrested 10 muggers, aged between 15 and 16, on charges of killing a youth in the port city's Halishahar area on Tuesday night.
The police seized two stolen mobile phones and a blood-stained knife from their possession.
Md Sumon, 18, a mechanic, was killed after a gang of 10 to 12 muggers stabbed him and his friend in Artillery Road area on Tuesday. Sumon was declared dead at a hospital.
