8 accused in hacking Argentina supporter couple

A case has been filed against eight Brazil fans for hacking an Argentinean supporter and his wife in Khulna.

The uncle of injured Md Shukur Hawlader, Dholu Sheikh, filed the case with Daulatpur police station on Monday. 

Police are yet to detain anyone.

Officer In-charge of Daulatpur police station Kazi Mostak Ahmed said: "Clashes occurred between Argentina and Brazil supporters regarding the ongoing World Cup in Mahshsherpara area. Dholu Sheikh lodged an attempt-to-murder case regarding that on Monday night."

Dholu stated: "My nephew and his wife were hacked with sharp weapons during the clash that occurred between Brazil-Argentina fans. They are both undergoing treatment in Khulna Medical College hospital. Their situation has improved."

Police's investigation officer Sub-Inspector Shahinur Rahman said attempts are being made to arrest those accused in the case.

On Saturday, Argentina's first match ended in a draw. As a result, Brazil supporters from Mashsherpara started to ridicule the Argentina supporters. The next day, when Brazil ended up with a draw as well, their supporters were met with similar behaviour.

On Monday morning, Brazil supporters called Argentina supporter Shukur Hawlader from his house and started to hack him with sharp weapons. When his wife Minu tried to come to his aid, she was injured in the struggle as well.
