Four suspected drug traders have been killed in separate incidents of “gunfights” in three districts.
The incidents took place on Tuesday, as the countrywide anti-narcotics drive continues.
So far, about 136 people, mostly alleged drug dealers, have been killed and scores of others arrested since the drives began a month ago.
In Rangpur, a suspected drug peddler named Robiul Islam was killed in a “gunfight” with the police in Kaunia upazila.
Law enforcers also seized narcotics during the anti-drug drive that took place in the early hours of the day.
Kaunia police station Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) Abdul Aziz confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune.
Police sources said a team of police conducted a raid in the Haragach area, on a tip off that a gang of drug peddlers was gathering in the area.
Sensing police presence, the suspected drug traders opened fire at the law enforcers.
In retaliation, police fired back, leaving Robiul dead, but his associates managed to flee the scene.
Local police said Rabiul was a notorious drug trader and was accused in 10 drug-related cases.
Ronbiul’s body has been sent to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital.
In Mymensingh, two suspected drug peddlers --Munna, 20, son of Suruj Ali, and Idris Ali, son of Faizuddin, were killed in a “gunfight” with rivals.
Police recovered the bodies from Brahmaputra rail bridge area in the morning.
The victims' family members claimed that some plainclothes police identifying themselves as members of Detective Branch picked up the duo from Mashkanda Sheba Drug Rehabilitation Centre on June 1, reports UNB.
Mahmudul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kotwali model police station, said Idris and Munna were listed drug traders and also accused in several cases.
He said the bodies were sent to Mymensingh Medical College Morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, Syed Nurul Islam, superintendent of Mymensingh police, said they were killed in a “gunfight” over enmity among the drug traders.
In Bogra, Rigan alias Liton, 32, was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Matidhali intersection in sadar upazila around 2:30am.
Sanatan Chakraborty, additional superintendent of Bogura police, said a police team conducted an anti-narcotics drive in the area around 2:30am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, a gang of drug traders opened fire on them, prompting them to retaliate in self-defense, police said.
At one stage, Rigan was caught in the line of fire and injured critically while others managed to flee the scene.
Later, he was declared dead when taken to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College.
Rigan was accused in five drug related cases, reports UNB.
