Transport workers have blocked the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in Sitakunda upazila for two hours, protesting an alleged assault on a truck driver by the station staff.
The workers blocked the highway in front of Load Control Station at Boro Darogar Hat point with trucks around 9am, creating acute traffic congestion in the area.
They also locked in a clash with police when the law enforcers tried to disperse them from the road following a chase and counter chase between them, witnesses said.
The law enforcers fired several rounds of tear shells on the protesters to disperse them, Officer-in-Charge (investigation) of Sitakunda police station Mozammel Haq said.
Later, the transport workers withdrew the blockade around 12pm, he said.
Additional police were deployed in the area to avoid further unwanted situation, he added.
Witnesses said the Load Control Station staff asked a Dhaka-bound truck driver to land on the scale line but the driver tried to go straight denying the order.
At one stage, the argument turned into a clash, witnesses said.
