Two villages have been flooded after the collapse of parts of the embankment on the Sonai River in Habiganj’s Madhabpur upazila.
Locals said the embankment on both sides of the river gave in around Friday noon because of the unrelenting onrush of water from upstream.
Two villages – Choumuhni and Montola – were inundated, while some of the streets and markets of some nearby villages also went underwater, hampering road communication and trade.
More than 50 houses have been damaged.
Habiganj Water Development Board’s Executive Engineer Tawhidul Islam said they had heard that the streets and markets of several areas had been flooded after the embankment collapsed.
“The extent of damage could not be ascertained yet,” he added.
