In-laws compete for councillor positions in Khulna City Corporation election

In-laws, Sultan Mahmud Pintu and Sheikh Selim Ahmed are competing for the Ward No 7 councillor position for opposition parties in the Khulna City Corporation election. Pintu is the BNP candicate while Selim is Awami League’s. Selim said: “Pintu is my younger brother's brother-in-law. So he is also my brother-in-law by relation. And on top of that, Pintu is his elder son Khaled's brother-in-law, which makes him my son.” They had also competed in the 2013 elections. “Despite losing the election, I maintained my faith in the people, unlike Pintu, who has been up to several conspiracies,” he added. Regarding the election, Pintu said: “Selim and I may be related but I am connected to the people of this area with all my heart.” “Fearing defeat in the elections, Selim has become impatient to win the election at any cost. But the people are prepared to face any ploy,” he added. It was found that there were three cases against Pintu in the last five years, and he had been cleared of two charges so far. He has completed BSS. On the other hand, Selim has completed SSC and he is a contractor by profession, involved in agricultural jobs. Pintu and Selim remain the closest competitors since they last went up against each other in the 2013 election held on June 15, which Pintu won. The third candidate competing for Ward No 7 is Islami Andolon supporter Mizanur Rahman. Pintu has an annual income of Tk5,93,600, which comes from his agriculture related jobs, business and councillor honorarium. His liquid assets include Tk1,30,000, furniture, jewelry, and other items. His non-liquid assets include his paternal lands, buildings, and suchlike. Selim's annual income is Tk2,80,000, of which Tk20,000 comes from agricultural jobs, Tk48,000 comes from rent and the rest from his business. Liquid assets include Tk50,000, and bank and non-bank financial institutions hold Tk1 lakh. Non-liquid assets include 5.5 bigha land, shops, and other sources.
