Ex-army personnel killed in Tangail over wife’s extra marital affair

The Detective Branch (DB) of police have arrested three people in connection with the murder of a retired army personnel in Tangail. The victim’s wife planned the killing of her husband for her extra-marital affair and getting rid of lenders, the DB police of Tangail said at a press release on Sunday. The victim, Md Shamim, 40, a retired sergeant of the army, was found dead in Tangail’s Gopalpur in 2016. The arrested people are Sujon, Abdur Rahim and the victim’s wife Razia Begum. Sujon and Rahim gave confessional statements before the court. They said Razia planned the killing and they murdered Shamim following Razia’s instructions. However, police suspect a fourth person is also involved in the murder. Ashok Kumar Singh, officer-in-charge of DB police in Tangail district, said police arrested the three accused following an investigation. He said Shamim went missing on August 17, 2016 after he left home for Dhaka. Police recovered his body from a river in Gopalpur in Tangail a week later. Police started a probe into the case and later handed it to the DB police. On Friday, DB police conducted a drive in Savar’s Hemayetpur and arrested Sujon and Rahim. The next day they were produced before the court and gave confessional statements there. In their statement, the duo said Razia asked them to kill her husband in order to get rid of the lenders and continue her extra-marital affair with Sujon. On August 20, 2016, the duo took Shamim near a bridge in Gopalpur and kept him in an abandoned place. Then they tied his hands and legs and stabbed him to death. Later they threw the body into the river. Following their statement, DB police summoned Razia to their office on Sunday and she was shown arrested in the case. Police said they would produce Razia before the court and seek a 10-day remand to question her.
