Awami League mayoral candidate for Gazipur City Corporation polls, Jahangir Alam, has allegedly violated the electoral code of conduct. On Wednesday, he attended a dua mahfil (special prayers) at Kanaiya Government Primary School. Supporters of the Awami League candidate followed with a motorcycle procession during his arrival and exit. The prayer was organized by locals of the city corporation’s ward no 30. Sabina Yasmin, assistant teacher of Kanaiya Government Primary School, said Jahangir attended the prayer around 12 noon. Scores of students of the school welcomed him at the time. Gazipur city polls returning officer Rakib Uddin Mondal said he had already heard the news. Gazipur Deputy Commissioner, Dewan Mohammad Humayun Kabir, and Superintendent of Police, Md Harun ur Rashid have been asked to investigate and submit a report, he said. “Following the report we will take measures as per rule,” said the returning officer. However, Additional District Magistrate Sanjib Kumar Debnath said: “We went to the spot in the afternoon on hearing the news. But since nobody was available there at the time we could not take any action.”
