Of them, Mosharraf and Firoz were tried in absentia. The court also fined them Tk10,000 each, stating that a failure to provide this money would add another year of rigorous imprisonment to their sentences. According to the prosecution, the body of Golap Hossain, a trader, was found cut up into 10 pieces on the bank of the Brahmaputra River in the Kurerpar area on January 21, 2003 – three days after he went missing. The victim’s brother filed a case with the Sadar Police Station in this regard. After police arrested the convicts, they confessed before the court. Afterwards, police submitted a charge-sheet incriminating seven people. After examining records and questioning witnesses, Narsingdi Additional District and Session’s Judge AKM Mozammel Haque Chowdhury handed down the verdict which punished six and acquitted one accused, as the allegation against him could not be proved.
