“Technology is the carrier of development but it must be ensured that this technology does not become the cause of social disruption and alienation,” President Abdul Hamid said while addressing the 3rd convocation ceremony of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (Kuet).
He emphasized the use of information technology at all levels of education so that students can face future challenges by developing their skills and knowledge as per international standards.
In his speech, the president opined that though the mobile phone has become an essential part of everyday life, it is not a good sign if one’s whole life revolves around it.
He said: “Today, it is seen that people do not even talk to each other though sitting side-by-side as they are continuously on mobile phones. Even at home, they get engaged in using Facebook, playing mobile games, or checking emails.
“This disrupts and weakens family bonds and makes teenagers self-centered. Everyone needs to be aware about excessive use of technology.
“We must remember technology or mobile phones are not to be blamed for this, rather the sole responsibility goes to its users.”
The president congratulated the new graduates and advised the graduates to devote themselves to the task of nation-building along with their professional activities.
A total of 2,795 undergraduate degree certificates, 228 postgraduate degree certificates, eight PhD degree certificates, and 38 gold medals to top undergraduate students were awarded.
Noted scientist and educationist Prof Dr Mohammad Ali Asgar was the speaker. UGC chair Professor Abdul Mannan, Kuet Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Muhammad Alamgir, Dean Prof Dr Kazi Hamidul Bari, Prof Dr Abdur Rafiq, Prof Dr Mihir Ranjan Haldar, and Registrar GM Shahidul Islam, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
