Two people have been arrested with 90 metric tons of rice by RAB from Atahar-e-Nawab Auto Rice Mill in Chapainawabganj district of Rajshahi.
The two were arrested following a RAB raid Thursday night.
Arrested on charges of illegally selling rice, Bithi Rani Karmokar and Aminul Islam are both members of the government’s Kabikha (food for work) project and the Nowalabhanga union council.
Owner of the rice mill, Akbar Hossain, has fled, and the warehouse has been sealed off.
Shibganj district's food controller, Golam Rabbani, was placed in RAB custody the same night.
RAB-5 in-charge Squadron Leader Mohammad Syed Abdullah Al Murad said: “We conducted the raid based on a tip-off.
“The upazila UNO (Upazila Nirbahi Officer) allocated the rice for people working at a brickfield in Shibganj upazila's Nawalabhanga union. But instead the rice was sold to Nawab Auto Rice Mill,” he added.
RAB confirmed that preparation to file a case is underway.
