6 confess to rape and murder of girl in Chittagong

Six suspects reportedly confessed on Thursday night to their involvement in raping and killing a nine-year-old girl in Chittagong on January 21. The six accused are Belal Hossain Bijoy, 18, Rabiul Islam Rubel, 16, Hasibul Islam Liton, 26, Aksan Miah, 18, Md Sujon, 20 and caretaker Monirul Islam Monu, 49. The first suspect arrested on the same day of the murder was Monirul, the caretaker of the apartment building in the city's Akbar Shah area where the body of Fatema Akhter Mim was recovered. After interrogating the caretaker, police arrested the other five from various locations in Chittagong City and Comilla district on Wednesday night, said Md Faruk-Ul-Haque, deputy commissioner (west) of Chittagong Metropolitan city. During primary investigation, the accused confessed that there had been a feud between the mothers of Mim and Bijoy over money. “As a result of the conflict, Bijoy and six others raped and murdered Mim,” Alamgir Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Akbar Police Station said. “One of the accused, Saikat, is still absconding.” Mim, a student of Fatematuzzohra Hifzul Quran Madrassa, went missing from in front of her house four hours before her body was found in the building.
