Chandpur clinic sealed off after death of woman during abortion

Police have detained the director and a staff of a clinic in Matlab Uttar upazila, Chandpur and sealed it off following allegations that its authorities tried to conceal the dead body of a woman after she died during an abortion there.
The abortion was reportedly conducted without the presence of any physician.
Informed by locals on Monday morning, police recovered the body of Togi Rani Sarker, 42, wife of one Khitish Chandra Sarker from Kolakanda village, from the irrigation canal beside Boro Shatnal embankment in the upazila.
Khitish said his wife had been missing since 11am on Sunday when she left home for the abortion. The woman, already a mother of four, was supposed to undergo the abortion at Maria General Hospital and Diagnostic Centre.
Khitish also mentioned that his wife had underwent abortion twice at that clinic last year.
Chandpur Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Matlab Circle) Ranjan Kumar Das said the director of the clinic, Afroza Akhter Jhunu, reportedly conducted the abortion herself without the help of any physician.
The deceased's husband is likely to file a case in this connection.
