Gowher to Khasi parents: Don't marry off daughter without education

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's International Affairs Adviser Gowher Rizvi has called on the indigenous Khasi parents not to marry off their daughters without education. “Don't marry off your daughter before allowing them education. Send your daughters to the schools and colleges. Think of their future,” he said at a discussion and cultural program at Borenga Punji, a village of the Khasi people in Barlekha upazila, Moulvibazar on Monday afternoon.

Mentioning that diversity is an area of strength for Bangladesh, Gowher said: “This has transfused beauty to Bangladesh. That is why we should keep the diversity alive. Everyone belongs to this country. We'll march forward in Bangladesh altogether.” The program was organised by Shahbazpur Union Somaj Kalyan Sangstha. Earlier, the prime minister's adviser visited the Khasi village. The people of the Khasi village pressed home a seven-point demand to him at that time. The demands include ensuring their land rights, nationalizing Borenga Primary School and financial assistance for citrus and betel nut plantations.
