UPDF remembers slain leader Mithun Chakma

The United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and its affiliated organizations have organized an event and lit thousands of lamps in memory of its leader Mithun Chakma, who was murdered by unknown assailants earlier this month. The programs were held at Swanirvar grounds at Khagrachhari Sadar on Sunday afternoon. UPDF leader and Lakshimichari upazila Chairman Super Jyoti Chakma, central leader Devdanta Tripura and others attended and spoke at the event. All the speakers had demanded immediate arrest of Mithun’s killers. Afterwards, thousands of lamps were lit to honour the memory of the organizer of the Chittagong Hill Tracts-based political party. Mithun was shot dead in the Sadar upazila on January 3. UPDF has accused its rival political party, the MN Larma Group of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS), for his murder. JSS has denied any connection to the incident. Two cases have so far been filed over Mithun’s murder. On January 7, Khagrachhari Sadar police station’s Sub-Inspector AKM Mizanur Rahman filed a case over the murder, naming eight unidentified individuals as accused. Mithun’s cousin Oni Bikash Chakma in the second case filed two days later named 17 leaders of both MN Larma Group and newly-formed UPDF-Democratic Group as suspects.
