Three to die for killing Rajshahi schoolboy in 2014

A Rajshahi court has sentenced three people to death and another one to life imprisonment for abducting and killing a 10-year-old schoolboy in Rajshahi in 2014.

The three convicts are Majedur Rahman Sagor, 19, Nazmul Haque, 20, and Ripon Sarkar Liton, 20. The fourth convict is Asinur Begum, 32, who was also fined Tk10,000. Three other accused have also been acquitted as the charges against them could not be proved.

Rajshahi Speedy Tribunal judge Shirin Kabita Akhtar delivered the verdict in presence of the convicts around 4pm on Tuesday, said court police's Inspector Khurshida Banu Kona.

According to the prosecution and case details, the convicts had abducted Fazle Hossain Rabbi, a third-grader at Berabari Government Primary School and son of Ali Hossain, from Berabari area in the district's Mohanpur upazila on December 20, 2014.

They killed Rabbi and buried his body in a paddy field the same day. But later demanded Tk10 lakh as ransom from Rabbi's father Ali Hossain, prompting him to file a general diary at Mohanpur police station.

After failing to establish contact with the kidnappers on December 24 as scheduled, Ali had lodged an FIR with the police.

Rabbi's beheaded body was recovered from the paddy field two days later. Police later arrested the convicts after tracing their phones. Of them, Sagor and Asinur had confessed to their crimes in court.
