Vandals damaged at least 20 idols of deities in three Hindu temples in Jamaibazar area in Tungipara Upazila of Gopalganj district early on Thursday, police have said.
Priests informed the police after finding the damaged idols in Dumuria Sarbojanin Durga temple, Hari temple and Radhagobinda temple.
"The vandalism could have taken place as a consequence of a feud over setting up some shops in the area," Tungipara police station OC Mahamudul Hoque told the Dhaka Tribune.
"Two suspects have been detained for questioning. Drives are underway in search of other people involved and we hope to come to the end of the investigation soon."
Gopalganj Deputy Commissioner Md Mokhlesur Rahman Sarkar visited the spot accompanied by senior police officials and promised to take stern steps against the offenders.

"Some youths from the Hindu community prevented a move to build shops on public land in the area by two Uttar Bashbaria residents, namely Ejaj Sheikh and Siraj Sheikh," he said. "A tense situation prevailed over the issue till Wednesday evening and finally was resolved through an arbitration."
He alleged that it was seen that Ejaj Sheikh was holding a meeting with eight to ten people at night. Police said Ejaj went into hiding after the incident.
Temple Committee General Secretary Nirapad Basu said they would file a case regarding the incidents.
