Rangpur attack: Facebook ‘defamer’ placed on remand

A Rangpur court has placed Tito Chandra Roy, the main accused in Rangpur attack, on a four-day remand in a case where he is charged with committing cybercrime for allegedly putting up a derogatory post on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) on Facebook. Senior Judicial Magistrate Depangshu Kumar Roy granted the remand on Wednesday after hearing the case investigation officer's petition for 10-day remand.

Rangpur Dectective Branch (DB) OC Shariful Islam confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune. “We asked for 10 days of remand, but the court granted only four,” he added.

Tito was arrested on Tuesday from Jaldhaka upazila of Nilphamari district, four days after a group of unidentified miscreants, in retaliation of the supposed demeaning post by Tito, attacked Thakurbari village in Rangpur and vandalized a number of Hindu houses. At least one person was killed in the clash and many others were injured.

Later, a local businessman named Razu Mia filed a case against Tito under the ICT Act. Following the clash, a three-member probe committee was formed to investigate the matter.
