Chhatra League leader accused of inciting Khulna college girl suicide

A leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and his friend have been accused of driving a college girl to take her own life in Khulna. Bajua SN Degree College second year student Bonya Roy committed suicide on October 27. Her father filed a case with Dakop police on November 9 accusing the upazila’s Chhatra League unit General Secretary Swarnadip Zoaddar and his friend Avijit of incitement. Avijit, the prime accused, was arrested shortly after the case was filed, Dakop police station Officer-in-Charge Md Shahabuddin Chowdhury said. Swarnadip has since then been on the run. Bonya’s suicide was reported only a week after a similar incident in the area, involving the expelled chief of Chhatra League’s Bajua SN Degree College unit, came to light. In his complaint, Bonya’s father said his daughter had rented a room at Avijit’s house adjacent to the college. Avijit had helped his friend, Chhatra League leader Swarnadip, to get into a romantic relationship with Bonya. Swarnadip broke up with Bonya after a few days and put “mental pressure” on her, according to the police complaint. Avijit, with the help of elder sister Priyanka and friend Ujjal, cajoled Bonya into having an affair with him. A few days later, Bonya moved to another house. Avijit broke up with her and continued exerting mental pressure on her with the help of his friend Swarnadip. When Bonya went to Avijit’s house on October 27, both Avijit and Swarnadip humiliated her. They kept up the verbal assault and incited her to kill herself. She hanged herself after returning home. In a separate incident, SN Degree College’s expelled Chhatra League chief Inzamam was accused in a case on November 5 for inciting another student, Joyi Mondol, to kill herself. He surrendered before a Khulna court on Sunday.
