Murder accused breaks bathroom window, escapes from police lock-up

A murder accused escaped from custody after breaking the window bars of a bathroom in the Purbadhara police station in Netrokona on Wednesday. According to police and local sources, the accused Rubel Miah, 25, son of freedom fighter Helal Uddin from Garuakanda village in the upazila, was arrested from his home on Monday for allegedly killing Kakon Miah, 25 of Purbadhala’s Gayelapara village on August 25. Sub-Inspector SM Mozammel, along with four other policemen: Tofazzal Hossain, Manik Miah, Masud Rana and Kamrul Islam were on-duty at the police station. Constable Tafazzal Hossain was particularly in charge of the accused. Purbadhala police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ranjan Deb said Rubel Miah went to the bathroom around 4:30 in the morning. In there, he managed to break the window bars easily, since the rods were old and rusty. Then he slid his slim body through the small opening. Netrokona Additional Superintendent of Police SM Ashraful Alam said: "The operation to arrest the absconded is in progress." Absconded Rubel Miah already had criminal charges in cases of narcotics and hijacking. He has been charged with another case for escaping police custody. Ashraful Alam also said they were investigating the matter of negligence in this incident.
