A female migrant worker, who was allegedly tortured by her employer, has returned from Saudi Arabia in a psychologically unstable state.
The migrant worker returned from the gulf country in the early hours of Friday, Brac said in a media statement.
After landing at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, she began wandering around in the area. Later, the airport authorities took her to the Expatriates' Welfare Desk for her safety and handed her over to Brac.
The authorities identified the migrant worker from the documents she was carrying with her. She was sent as a domestic worker to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia through a recruiting agency in November, 2018.
Her family in Naogaon claimed she was tortured by her employer six months into her job in the Gulf country and that she was in jail for three months.
She was deported after she was provided with a travel pass from Saudi Arabia, Brac said.
In the last two years, at least 68 migrant workers have returned home with psychological health issues from different countries. Among them, 61 worked as domestic help.
Head of Brac Migration Program Shariful Hasan said these migrant workers were provided with psychosocial counselling before they were sent to their family members.
Brac is frequently informed about such cases by police and the Expatriates' Welfare Desk at the airport, although the exact number of migrant workers that have returned with psychological issues is unknown, Shariful said.
