Defence to appeal against Subhan verdict

Defence lawyers said they would file an appeal petition, challenging the tribunal verdict against Jamaat-e-Islami senior leader Abdus Subhan.

Subhan's lawyer Shishir Munir made this statement Wednesday afternoon, while expressing his reaction over the verdict that handed down the death penalty to the Jamaat leader.

Shishir said: “The verdict, which is given on the basis of the witnesses who were aged between two, three and four years, can not be acceptable. The tribunal has made a lawful and informational mistake while delivering the verdict.”

“We will present our points in the appeal,” he said.

While speaking of previous appeals in other war crimes cases, he said: “Every case is different. Even though the Appellate Division discharged the previous appeals, that does not mean they will not accept this petition.”

The three-member International Crimes Tribunal 2, led by Justice Obaidul Hassan, handed down death penalty to Subhan.

He was found guilty on six charges out of nine.
