Death row convict Azhar seeks acquittal

War criminal ATM Azharul Islam has appealed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court seeking acquittal of the death sentence handed down to him by the International Crimes Tribunal.

Azhar's lawyer Shishir Monir filed the petition on Wednesday afternoon.

The defence sought to argue 133 points in its 90-page petition. They also submitted 2,340 pages of documents regarding the case.

On December 30 last year, tribunal 1 sentenced the assistant secretary general of Jamaat to death on charges of committing genocide and crimes against humanity in Rangpur during the nine-month-long bloody Liberation War of 1971.
