The High Court has restored the highest punishment for negligent driving to seven years from the existing three years in jail.
The bench of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Khasruzzaman passed the order on Thursday afternoon, following a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh.
In its observation, the High Court mentioned that the highest punishment should be more than seven years imprisonment.
Supreme Court lawyer Manzill Murshid moved for the rights group during the hearing.
"The previous provision providing seven years in jail for road accident will remain in force from now on following the HC order," Manzill Murshid said.
The punishment for death because of reckless driving was seven years as per section 304 (B) of the penal code until 1985. But penalty was reduced to three-year in jail in the second amendment in the same year.
