Defence to appeal against Nizami’s verdict

The defence lawyer of war criminal Motiur Rahman Nizami will appeal in the apex court against the verdict.

Nizami’s lawyer Tajul Islam said this while expressing reaction over the verdict on the tribunal premises on Wednesday afternoon.

“The prosecution says the verdict reflected people’s expectations. But they cannot make such comment as there is a difference between the language of politics and court.” Tajul said:

“The court in its verdict said it was a great mistake to make Nizami a minister. But they have nothing to do about people’s choice. People elected him a minister. The court should accept our appeal in this point” he added.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami has been sentenced to death for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Justice M Enayetur Rahim, chairman of the three-member International Crimes Tribunal 1, delivered the much-delayed verdict at 12:20pm on Wednesday.
