The four members of a family, who were killed in their flat at Kolakandi in the capital’s south Keraniganj on Wednesday, were identified yesterday, police said.
The victims were Saju Ahmed, 35, his wife Ronji Begum, 28, their son Imran, 7, and daughter Sanjida, 2. Saju’s hometown is in Sarikanda village of Debiganj upazila, Panchagarh.
Officer-in-Charge of South Keraniganj police station Jalal Uddin Mir told the Dhaka Tribune that Saju’s elder brother Md Bashir Uddin came to Dhaka from Panchagarh yesterday morning and identified the bodies at Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue, where the bodies were taken for autopsy.
“Bashir will take the bodies back to the village for burial once the autopsies are complete,” he said.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Bashir said his brother was a good person and he had no idea why someone would want to kill him.
“He used to make his living as a trucker, transporting goods. He should have no enemies,” said Bashir.
“He had been living in Dhaka for 15-16 years but had no contact with us for the past two months,” he added.
Assistant Superintendent of Keraniganj police Kazi Moskura Lima, meanwhile, said Saju and his wife were suspected to be the members of a gang of robbers.
“They would move to new houses in every several months. They were supposed to leave the house where they were killed within four or five days,” she said.
“I think a feud among the gang members resulted in the murder.”
OC Jalal said Bashir filed a case with South Keraniganj police station against unnamed assailants yesterday afternoon.
“Police are probing the incident and the reason for the murders would be revealed soon,” he said.
“We are interrogating caretaker of the house Md Sohel and local CNG-run auto-rickshaw driver Akkas Mia,” he said, adding that no further details could be disclosed for the sake of the investigation.
Meanwhile, police yesterday arrested Janu Begum, the wife of Rafiq who had rented the flat from Sohel.
