‘Saradha’s Jamaat funding allegation under probe’

India’s Home Minister Rajnath Singh yesterday said the allegation that Trinamool Congress parliamentarian Ahmed Hassan Imran had used Saradha Group funds to create unrest in Bangladesh was under investigation, reported Anandabazar Patrika.

“The law will take its own course and we will not intervene in it,” he said while addressing a programme at the ministry.

The minister’s comments will add to the embarrassment of the Trinamool leadership, the report said.

Indian home ministry sources said the matter was very sensitive as a member of parliament had been accused of treason.

India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating the Saradha scam and the agency works under the prime minister, which is why Rajnath avoided giving a more detailed explanation yesterday, the report said.

In a report on Friday, Anandabazar Patrika, quoting a Bangladeshi intelligence report, said the Saradha Group had extended considerable financial assistance to Jamaat-e-Islami in Bangladesh to help the party create unrest after Sheikh Hasina’s government began trying its top leaders for war crimes.

The intelligence report accused Imran of playing the key role in sending the money to Jamaat, and added that the Bangladeshi authorities had officially complained to the Indian government about this.
