HC seeks explanation of patient’s suicide at DMCH

The High Court (HC) yesterday sought a report on the negligence of duty by the staff of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) which resulted in a patient committing suicide in the hospital premises.

In response to a writ petition filed by human rights organisation Ain O Salsih Kendra (ASK), the HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman ordered MM Niajuddin, secretary at the Ministry of Health and Family Affairs, and Brig Gen Dr Mustafizur Rahman, director of the DMCH, to submit a report on the action taken against the persons who failed to provide medical help to the patient.

The victim, Nur Nabi, from Lakshmipur, jumped from the eighth floor of a DMCH building on Tuesday and killed himself when he was allegedly denied medical attention at the hospital.

Based on a report on the incident published in a national English daily yesterday, the ASK filed the writ petition at the High Court.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune about the case, Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy said the HC bench also ordered an explanation of why the authorities concerned should not be directed to provide Nur Nabi’s family with adequate compensation.

“The judges also asked them to explain, in two weeks, as to why their failure and negligence to provide medical treatment to Nur Nabi should not be declared illegal,” he said.
