HC rejects Indian TV channels' ban plea

The High Court has rejected the writ petition seeking ban on the Indian television channels as the petitioner failed to represent the supporting documents over the petition.

The vacation bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Abu Taher Muhammad Saifur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday afternoon.

Deputy Attorney General Amit Talukder moved for the government while Abdul Matin Khosru presented the documents on behalf of the cable TV network Star Group in the hearing.

On August 7, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking an answer to why all the Indian television channels should not be banned in Bangladesh.

In the petition, Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Syeda Sahin Ara Laili said broadcasting of programmes by the Indian channels is one of the major causes for degradation of our society.

On August 3, Advocate Aklas Uddin Bhuiyan sent the legal notice through a registry post to the information minister, secretary of information and BTRC chairman, seeking a stop to the airing of all Indian TV channels in Bangladesh within 24 hours.
