MP Bodi's graft case verdict on Nov 2

A Dhaka court on Wednesday fixed November 2 to deliver the judgement against ruling Awami League’s Cox’s Bazar 4 constituency lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi in a graft case filed over amassing illegal wealth. Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar of the Dhaka's Special Judge's Court 3 set the date after the two sides completed closing arguments in the case. The same court framed the charges against the lawmaker on September 8 last year. ACC's counsel Mahmud Hossain Jahangir presented his argument on behalf of the state while Mahfuzur Rahman Likhon represented the accused. Bodi, who is now on bail, was present before the court. On October 12 last year, a Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court sent Bodi to jail rejecting his bail petition as he surrendered before it. Later, the High Court granted a six months’ anticipatory bail to the accused on October 27. The case was filed with Ramna police station on August 21, 2014 over amassing illegal wealth and concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the anti-graft watchdog. Earlier the MP threatened to resign if the ACC could prove his involvement in corruption. According to the case, the lawmaker informed the ACC on March 20 last year that he along with his wife and children owned movable and immovable properties worth Tk5.20 crore. But his income tax return showed that they possessed properties worth Tk16.06 crore till June 30, 2013. Five years back, his yearly income was only Tk2 lakh that rose to Tk15 crore in 2013, as per his wealth statements submitted to the Election Commission before the 2008 and the January 5, 2014 national elections. Bodi had been mired into a deep controversy for his unruly and violent activities. He has been named on the list of Yaba smugglers prepared by the Home Ministry. His three brothers, brother-in-laws and some other relatives have also been listed as traders of the contraband drugs. He is also accused of patronising illegal Rohingyas.
