A High Court bench has declined to hear a writ petition that challenged the legality of the National Broadcast Policy 2014.
The bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman dropped the petition from its cause list on Thursday afternoon, saying the plea is pre-matured as the policy had only got the cabinet approval.
Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond filed the petition on August 18.
In his petition, Eunus Ali urged the court to issue a rule upon the government, seeking an explanation as to why the broadcast policy should not be declared illegal.
He also requested the court to direct the government to formulate a guideline for talk shows and other broadcast programmes aired on private and public television channels.
On August 4, the cabinet approved the draft of National Broadcast Policy that proposes restrictions on some issues which key players of the electronic media industry think may hamper their independence.
