‘Nothing to be panicked over impeachment bill’

There is no reason to be panicked regarding the restoration of parliament's power to impeach Supreme Court judges, Bangladesh Law Commission Chairman Justice ABM Khairul Haque said.

The former chief justice made the statement at a press briefing at the law commission office in the capital on Monday.

Khairul said: “Parliament represents people. So, all people including judges should be accountable to the parliament.”

No clashes between parliament and judiciary will be created after the restoration of parliament's power to impeach the judges, he said.

He cited that the parliaments of UK, USA, India have power to impeach the judges.

He, however, said a practical law should be formed so that the judges can defend themselves.

The cabinet on Monday has approved the final draft of 16th Amendment Act 2014, allowing the restoration of parliament's authority to impeach Supreme Court judges.
