A Dhaka court has sentenced five accused to death in Shipon Kazi alias Junun murder case.
Judge ABM Sajedur Rahman of speedy trial tribunal 3 delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom in presence of one of the convicts on Thursday.
The death row convicts are Lalin Shikder, Monir Hossain, Swapan Mollah alias Dalim, Obaidul Sheikh alias Ewadul Sheikh and Tapan Kazi alias Bagha.
The court also acquitted Md Mokarram Sikder, Md Rezaul Kazi, Sheikh Rony Ahmed, Wahedul Mina, Md Farid Mina and Ahsan Kazi as the charges brought against them were not proved.
Of the accused, Lalin, Monir, Tapan and Swapan went into hiding after they had granted bail from the court while the remaining six are now in jail.
According to the case details, accused Lelin Shikder had a business relation with deceased Shipon. Following their relation, a love affair developed between Lelin’s sister and Shipon.
Later, Lenin proposed Shipon to get married to his sister. But Shipon refused to marry her. Following the conflict, Lelin and other accused killed Shipon at Nowkhanda village under Maksedpur upazila of Gopalgang district on June 30, 2006.
After completion of the investigation, DB police submitted a charge sheet before a Gopalganj court on July 17, 2007 against the 11 accused while the court framed charges against the accused on February 17, 2010.
Later, the case shifted at the speedy trial tribunal 3 in Dhaka for quick disposal in December 2012.
A total of 14 prosecution witnesses gave depositions before the court in the case.
Deceased mother Moriam Bibi filed the murder case with Maksedpur police station.
