A Dhaka court has placed Sub-Inspector of Mirpur police station Zahidur Rahman Zahid and police source Nasim Sheikh on a three-day fresh remand for quizzing on the custodial death of Mahabubur Rahman Sujon, a garment-waste trader.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ashok Kumar Dutta passed the order when DB Inspector Nibaron Chandra Barmon, the Investigation Officer (IO) of the case, produced them before the court this noon seeking a six-day remand.
The investigation officer told the court that they need for more information from the detainees.
The court, however, granted three-day remand for the third time. Earlier, they were remanded for another 10 days in two separate terms -- six and four -- in this connection.
The IO said the accused had picked up Sujon from his house at Hazaribagh around midnight on July 13 and tortured him in custody at Mirpur police station. As Sujon fell sick, the accused took him to a local clinic and later shifted to Suhrawardy Hospital at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar where the doctors declared him dead on July 13.
The two were arrested on July 16 on charges of torturing and killing Sujon.
Police lodged a case the next day accusing eight over the murder and the detective police was put in charge of the investigation.
The others accused are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Raj Kumar, constables - Anwar and Rashidul Haque - and police informers - Nasim, Palash, Faisal, and Khokan. They were absconding till writing this report.
Sujon's wife Mamtaj Sultana Lucy filed a case against 10 people, including Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mirpur Police Station Salauddin Ahmed and Sub-Inspector Zahidur Rahman, with the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court.
The court admitted the case and ordered a judicial probe into the incident.
