A man got life term imprisonment for killing his wife in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat district yesterday.
District and Sessions Judge SM Solayman gave the verdict.
The court also imposed a fine of Tk15,000, in default, to suffer one more year in prison.
The convict Zahidul Islam Forazi, 35, lived with his wife Asia Begum in the Signal Tower area under Mongla City Corporation.
According to court sources, Zahidul, who is a day labourer by profession, married Asia in 2004. Since then, there were frequent conflicts between the couple over different familial issues.
Following the conflicts, Forazi used to physically abuse Asia.
On March 13, 2005, the couple engaged in a quarrel when Zahidul started beating Asia At one stage, Asia died.
To portray the incident as a case of suicide, Zahidul hung the body with a rope from the ceiling of the house and declared that his wife had committed suicide.
The next day police recovered the body and sent it to Bagerhat sadar hospital for an autopsy.
