Kamaruzzaman’s appeal hearing adjourned

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has adjourned till September 2 the hearing on appeal petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Mohammad Kamaruzzaman challenging the death penalty for war crimes.

Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha has passed the order on Wednesday afternoon replying to a two-day time plea filed by the defence lawyers as Supreme Court will be on vacation from July 25 to August 30.

Earlier, the bench has deferred until June 3 the hearing on the appeal.

On May 9 of last year, International Crimes Tribunal 2 awarded death penalty for Jamaat leader and former al-Badr man Kamaruzzaman on two out of the seven charges brought against him.

He was given the death penalty for committing genocide at Sohagpur and murder of Golam Mostafa.

On June 6, Kamaruzzaman's defence appealed against the tribunal verdict at the Supreme Court.
