Judicial inquiry ordered over Mirpur trader's death

A Dhaka court has ordered a judicial inquiry into the custodial death of a jhut (garment waste) trader Mahbubur Rahman Sujon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judge Md Johirul Hoque made the direction after filing a case by the victim’s wife Mamata Sultana Luchi with Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judges Court on Sunday morning.

Luchi filed the case against 10 people, including officer-in-charge of Mirpur police station, for allegedly torturing her husband to death at Mirpur police station.

The case was lodged under section 15 of Torture and Custodial Death Act 2013.

The accused are Mirpur police station Officer-in-Charge Salauddin Ahmed, Sub-Inspector Zahidur Rahman Zahid, Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajkumar, constables Asad and Rashedul and police sources Mithun, Nasim Sheikh, Foysal, Khokon and Polash.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Jatiyo Mohila Samiti President Advocate Salma Ali submitted an application to the court seeking security for the plaintiff.

In reply, the court said the application will be directed to the Home Ministry.

A team of police led by SI Zahidur Rahman picked up Sujon and his wife Mamataj Sultana Luchi along with their five-year-old son Mosharraf from their residence in the capital’s Shankar area late at night on July 12 and tortured Sujon to death in the early hours of July 13.
