Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman M Bodiuzzaman said yesterday “corruption has increased tremendously” during Ramadan because businesses are trying to squeeze out the maximum amount of profit possible during this month.
The chairman was addressing a discussion and iftar programme at the media centre of the anti-graft body’s headquarters. Reporters Against Corruption (RAC) arranged the discussion.
He said businesses strove to make all of their profits during the holy month, which was the opposite of business practices in other countries.
“Unfortunately when Ramadan comes, businesses participate in massive corruption to extract the most money from the consumer’s pocket,” he said.
“Whereas businesses in other countries offer discounts during religious holidays, Bangladeshi businesses indulge in all sorts of irregularities to maximise profits during Ramadan,” the chairman said.
ACC Commissioner M Shahabuddin said corrupt people do not care about the spiritual importance of Ramadan.
“We have conducted raids this month and have trapped and detained corrupt officials,” he said.
