HC summons police officials over Mirpur rape

The High Court yesterday summoned three persons, including Mirpur zone deputy commissioner and OC of the police station, to appear before it on July 15 in connection with the rape of an RMG worker in a microbus.

The court also directed the police to take immediate steps to arrest the offenders and seize the vehicle.

The bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Ejarul Haque Akondo passed the order following a writ petition filed by the Children Charity Bangladesh Foundation.

Supreme Court lawyer Abdul Halim contended for the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Amatul Karim represented the government.

On July 15, the two police officials have to inform the court about the measures they have taken so far to arrest the culprits. Meanwhile, Dr Bilkis Begum, coordinator of the One-Stop Crisis Centre at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, has been asked to inform the court about the findings of medical examination of the victim.

The bench also issued a ruling, seeking explanations as to why the government should not be directed to formulate appropriate laws so that offenders, particularly drivers of bus, taxi and truck, and transport workers can be identified instantly.

The court also asked why the government should not be directed to introduce devices to bring those responsible for rape, stalking, eve-teasing and abduction to justice. The victim, an orphan who works at a garment factory in Mirpur of the capital, was kidnapped and raped on July 1 on her way back home.

A case was registered against four people, including two identified and two other unnamed persons. The names of the accused are Farid and Sumon, Sub-Inspector of Mirpur police station Matiur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune.
