30 hurt in clash in Sunamganj

At least 30 people were injured when two villagers engaged in a fierce clash in the Patharia bazar area of the Sadar upazila here, yesterday, in an attempt to establish dominance in the locality.

Five of the injured were admitted to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical conditions and the rest were taken to the Sunamganj Sadar hospital.

Witnesses said the accident took place at around 12pm when the residents of the Patharia village and the Gazinagar village engaged in a violent clash, using local weapons, in an attempt to establish supremacy in the area, leaving a total of 30 people from both sides injured.

On being informed, police and RAB members rushed to the spot and quelled the violence.

During the clash, most of the shops of Patharia bazar were vandalised and looted by the unruly villagers, claimed the affected shop owners.

Dakkhin Sunamganj police station OC Md Al-Amin said the villagers had been at loggerheads over establishing dominance in the area for a long time, and this is what had caused the clash.

The situation is under control and policemen were deployed in the area to prevent any further clashes from occurring, the OC continued.
