The prosecution from the International Crimes Tribunal submitted formal charges against former Jatiya Party lawmaker engineer Mohammad Abdul Jabbar yesterday, for his alleged crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
The charges include murder, genocide, forced conversion and looting which took place at Naligram, Tushkhali and Angulkata villages.
According to the charges, Jabbar had been involved in the killing of 36 people in Angulkata and Mothbaria, setting fire and looting of around 560 houses. He also forcefully converted around 200 people in Phuljhuri in May, 1971.
Prosecutors Jahid Imam, Mukhlesur Rahman, Shahidur Rahman and Sabina Yeasmin submitted a 79-page long formal charge mentioning five specific charges to AKM Nasiruddin Mahmud, registrar of the tribunal, around 11 am.
Jabbar, 82, was a chairman of Peace Committee in Mothbaria of Pirojpur. He has been a fugitive since 2009. The two-time lawmaker is the second accused from the Jatiya Party after Syed Mohammad Qaisar of Habiganj.
The investigation agency submitted its probe report to the prosecution on April 29 and reported to have found sufficient proof that Jabbar had been affiliated with war crimes.
Helal Uddin, who was the investigation officer in the cases against a war crimes convict Delawar Hossain Sayedee and AKM Yusuf, began the probe last year.
“His father-in-law was a local leader of Muslim league in Pirojpur,” the IO said.
