At least 45 BNP men were sent to jail for attacking police personnel, vandalising vehicles and exploding crude bombs during hartal hours enforced by the BNP-led 19-party alliances last year.
Chief Executive Magistrate, Narsingdi Nitai Chandra Saha passed the order after the accused surrendered before a court yesterday seeking bail.
President of Sadar upazila unit BNP Samir Bhuyan, President of Madhabdi municipality unit BNP Aman Ullah, General Secretary Md Jakaria, Organising Secretary Md Mijanur Rahman, vice-organising secretary of district unit BNP Sheikh Farid, Madhabdi Municipality Councillor Mokbul Hossain, among the BNP leaders, were sent to jail.
According to court sources, these leaders along with their supporters put up barricade on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway putting logs and setting fire on road on October 30 last year.
The BNP men also vandalised scores of vehicles and swooped on police personnel.
On that day, three separate cases were filed with Narsingdi Sadar police station.
Police also submitted charge-sheets against 73 BNP leaders and activists.
