The Anti-Corruption Commission has initiated an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of government money and amassing “illegal” wealth by two more lawmakers of the ruling Awami League.
The lawmakers are BM Muzammel Haque of Shariatpur 1 constituency and Abu Sayeed Al-Mahmud Swapon of Joypurhat-2.
BM Muzammel Haque allegedly misappropriated government money while Abu Sayeed Al-Mahmud Swapon amassed illegal wealth beyond his known sources of income, ACC officials said.
The anti-graft body has appointed its Deputy Director Moloy Kumar Saha of its Faridpur district office to conduct the inquiry.
When contacted Moloy Kumar said he was informed about the responsibility but yet to get the official order.
BM Muzammel in association with some other people, mostly union parishad chairmen, has misused money from government’s fisheries development projects at Shariatpur by distributing nine ponds and lowland at a cost of around Tk31.5 lakh to their near ones.
While the issue was brought to the notice of lawmaker Muzammel Haque he said the allegation against him surfaced four years back and he is confident that the Anti-Corruption Commission will not find any evidence for its claim.
Lawmaker Abu Sayeed, who was elected for the first time as an MP, has allegedly accumulated illegal wealth, according to the allegation.
The annual income of the MP has witnessed a 12 times rise in the last five years and his wife Mehbuba Alam earns over Tk1crore annually now, which was zero in 2008.
