At least 15 persons including three children were killed in the last three months in six upazilas under the district.
Of the total, four were in Jhenaidah Sadar upazila, five in Sailkupa, two each in Kaliganj and Kotchandpur upazilas and two in Harinakundu upazila, confirmed respective police stations.
Despite the fact, police labeled the law and order situation in the district “normal”.
Additional Superintendent of Police in the district Mohammad Hasanuzzaman attributed the killings to social unrest.
He said some of the dead were the members of outfits killed in an intra-party clash.
“We always take preventive measures to keep a check on criminals to restore peace to the society,” said the police official.
As the murder incidents unfolded, the Dhaka Tribune correspondent learned that a Bairat village resident Kamal Hossain in Kaliganj upazila was chopped to death on January 10 centring an alleged illicit relation between himself and a non-Muslim woman.
On January 23, one Abdul Gani Fakir was stabbed to death over land issue by his son in village Balidapara under the same upazila.
Police arrested the son who confessed to killing his father.
On January 22, a mentally retarded mother killed her two-year-old daughter Sumaiya Khatun in Solemanpur village under Kotchandpur upazila.
On January 26, the upazila unit Jamaat-e-Islami leader Enamul Haque was killed in an encounter with police in Naodapara village under the upazila.
In Tikari village under Jhenaidah Sadar, two individuals including an 11-year-old student were killed as police allegedly opened fire on the agitating villagers locked in a clash over establishing supremacy in the locality on January 18.
Bullet-hit Alam died on the spot while the student succumbed to his injuries at Faridpur Medical College Hospital.
On January 21 night, an “easy bike” driver was killed by some unknown miscreants in Udoypur village under the upazila.
The victim was identified as Sohel Alam.
The body of a farmer Channu in Badanpur village under the Sadar upazila was found hanging from a tree with injury marks all over his body on March 24.
In Srirampur village under Sailkupa upazila, Laxmi Rani Das, a fourth grader, was abducted and killed by a gang of young thugs on February 9.
The girl was killed as her father refused to part with ransom to the abductors. Police arrested one in this connection.
A Siddi village resident Mynuddin in the upazila was slaughtered on March 3. The villagers suspected that he was involved in underground politics.
On March 10, the body of a housewife, Julia Khatun, in Nalkhola village in Sailkupa was recovered from her in-laws house.
Julia’s father alleged that her husband Arif Sikder along with his family members killed her and made it look like a suicide.
On March 17, another housewife Beuty Khatun was allegedly tortured to death by her in-laws in Satgachhi village under upazila.
In Mingram village of the upazila, one Azad was beaten to death by his brother and his nephew over a land dispute on March 30.
On February 2, a decomposed body of a three-year-old boy Hazrat Ali was recovered from a well in Rathkhola village under Harinakundu upazila.
On March 10, a BNP activist Abdul Aziz of Bharuapara village in Harinakundu upazila was killed.
The miscreants severed the victim’s head from the body and left it at Sadhuhati village under Jhenaidah Sadar.
