Benazir Ahmed, commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), yesterday said curbing crime was not possible as law enforcers remained occupied with tackling political programmes.
“The ongoing political culture is responsible for this. Police are always busy chasing people accused in politically motivated cases and which is why they cannot squeeze out time to curb crime and arrest criminals,” Benazir added.
DMP commissioner made such statement while addressing a view-exchange meeting at the DMP headquarters organised by the Coalition against Tobacco Bangladesh.
Mili Bishwash, additional commissioner (traffic), Abdul Jalil, additional commissioner (admin), Ibrahmi Fatemi, joint commissioner and Ali Niamat, president of the Coalition against Tobacco also spoke on the occasion.
“We have given all-out effort to maintain security of people during political unrest but if we had given the same effort to arrest criminals, people could have lived a more peaceful life. We could also have busted drug nets.”
We have arrested over 400 drug dealers in the capital over the last three month and the mobile courts punished those drug dealers, he said.
He claimed that there has no phensydil factory in the capital. He urged people to help police in controlling crime and stop the use of drug.
