ACC hails media for its fight against graft

The media is playing a vital role in combating corruption, ACC Chairman M Bodiuzzaman yesterday said.

The anti-graft body finds evidence and information from the media reports on the basis of which it conducts inquiry and takes steps to ensure punishment to corrupt people, he said.

The ACC picked up 155 media reports for inquiry in last year, 115 reports in 2012, 97 in 2011, 82 reports in 2010 and four in 2009.

The chairman was addressing at the “ACC Media Award 2014" ceremony held at the ACC auditorium at Segunbagicha marking the week-long Corruption Prevention Week 2014.

The anti-graft body yesterday awarded Anti-Corruption Commission Media Award 2014 to three reporters from print and electronic media for their investigative reports on corruption.

A three-member jury board headed by former editor of the Independent Mahbubul Alam scrutinised the reports before it finalised three reporters for award.

The other two members of the board are editor of daily Samakal Golam Sarwar and Editor-in-Chief and Chief Executive Officer of the Boishakhi Television Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul.

The reporters who received the awards are New Age Staff Correspondent Sadiqur Rahman, ABC Radio Senior Reporter Amin Al Rasheed and Independent Television Staff Correspondent Muhammad Rishad Huda.

All three reporters were awarded a crest, certificate and prize money.

ACC Commissioner M Shahabuddin said journalists were the prime source that unveils corruption.

“The ACC thinks that the media can play the strongest and effective role in curbing corruption,” he said. ACC Commissioner Nasir Uddin Ahmed was also present at the programme.
