The BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Oikya Parishad (JAOP) has swept the Supreme Court Bar Association election against the ruling Awami League-backed Sammilita Ainjibi Samannay Parishad (SASP) on Friday.
Out of the 14 posts, the JAOP has got 13 posts including the posts of the president and the general secretary.
The Vice Chairman of Bangladesh Bar Council Khandakar Mahbub Hossain was elected as the president while Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon was elected as the general secretary of the association.
Around 3,143 lawyers of the apex court have cast their votes in the poll conducted by a seven-member panel, headed by senior lawyer M Nur Hossain Chowdhury. There are a total of total 4,055, lawyers in the country’s apex court.
A total of 35 candidates, 14 each from Awami League-backed and BNP-backed panels, contested in the election for 14 posts of the association.
Former Law Minister Abdul Matin Khasru and Advocate Rabiul Islam Budu from the Awami League panel competed for the posts of president and general secretary respectively against Bangladesh Bar Council vice-chairman Khandker Mahbub Hossain and current SCBA general secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon from the BNP-backed panel.
